Summary
Cnet Technologies seeks a long-term, durable, and cost-effective Primary Storage solution on the AWS cloud. Currently utilizing Veeam backup, they aim to migrate to AWS for improved durability and cost efficiency. Key considerations include seamless integration with Veeam, adherence to long-term storage needs, and optimization for cost-effectiveness. The solution will prioritize data security, compliance, and reliability while ensuring a smooth transition and minimal downtime during migration. Training and documentation will be provided for effective management and operation of the AWS storage solution.
Challenges
While using Veeam to backup data from an on-premises environment to an Amazon S3 bucket offers numerous benefits, there are also several challenges and considerations that organizations may encounter:
Network Bandwidth and Latency
Transferring large volumes of data from on-premises to the cloud can be time-consuming and bandwidth-intensive. Organizations with limited network bandwidth or high latency connections may experience slow backup performance and increased backup windows.
Data Transfer Costs
AWS charges for data transferred out of the Amazon S3 bucket, and organizations need to carefully monitor and manage data transfer costs, especially for large-scale backup operations. Backup strategies that minimize data transfer, such as incremental backups, can help mitigate costs.
Data Security and Compliance
Ensuring data security and compliance with regulatory requirements when transferring sensitive data to the cloud is critical. Organizations need to implement encryption for data in transit and at rest, enforce access controls, and comply with industry-specific regulations like GDPR or HIPAA.
Backup and Recovery Performance
Ensuring timely backup and recovery of data from Amazon S3 requires efficient backup and recovery processes. Organizations need to optimize backup job configurations, leverage caching and deduplication techniques, and perform regular testing and validation of backup and recovery procedures.
By addressing these challenges and considerations proactively, enreap can successfully leverage Veeam backup to Amazon S3 for reliable and cost-effective data protection in their on-premises environments while ensuring security, compliance, and performance requirements are met.
Solution
We provide a solution for transferring files to Amazon S3 buckets via AWS PrivateLink by using Site to Site VPN and VPC endpoint. To safely transfer your application's files and data to cloud storage, use this method. Low latency access to that data from your on-premises apps will also be made possible by this.
1.Configure AWS PrivateLink for Amazon S3
Use AWS PrivateLink to establish private connectivity between your VPC and Amazon S3. Set up PrivateLink
endpoints for Amazon S3 within your VPC to securely route traffic.
2.Configure Site to Site VPN
Implemented Site to site VPN connection between On-prem to AWS account for secure connection.
3.Configure Veeam Backup & Replication
• Configure Veeam Backup & Replication to create backup jobs for the desired data sources.
• Define backup policies, retention periods, and encryption settings within Veeam to ensure data protection and
compliance.
• Configure Veeam to use Amazon S3 as the backup repository by specifying the S3 bucket credentials and
endpoint.
• Perform initial full backups followed by incremental or differential backups to minimize data transfer and
storage costs.4.Verify Data Transfer and Access
Confirm that the data has been successfully stored in the designated Amazon S3 buckets and ensure low-latency
access for on-premises applications.
5.Monitor and Maintain
Continuously monitor the file transfer process, performance of the Amazon S3 File Gateway, and PrivateLink
connections. Review access logs, monitor data transfer rates, and troubleshoot any issues.
